Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) was an Austrian neurologist and founder of psychoanalysis, a clinical method and theoretical model for treating psychopathology through dialogue about unconscious conflict. Trained in medicine at the University of Vienna, he developed free association and dream analysis to access unconscious material, and built a lasting model of the mind centered on the id, ego, and superego. He fled Nazi-occupied Vienna for London in 1938 and died there in 1939; his work remains foundational to, and contested within, psychology and psychiatry.
