Donald Winnicott (1896-1971) was an English paediatrician and psychoanalyst, especially influential in the field of object relations theory and developmental psychology. A leading member of the British Independent Group and twice President of the British Psychoanalytical Society, he is best known for his concepts of the transitional object, the true self and false self, and the good enough mother providing a holding environment for the developing infant.
