Coleman Griffith (1893-1966) was an American psychologist widely credited as the founder of sport psychology in the United States. Appointed director of the newly opened Athletic Research Laboratory at the University of Illinois in 1925, he systematically investigated the psychological factors affecting athletic performance and, in 1923, taught what is considered the first university course in sport psychology. He is remembered as the father of American sport psychology, though he is also sometimes called the prophet without disciples because none of his own students continued the field after him.
