Albert Ellis (1913 to 2007) was an American psychologist and psychotherapist who founded Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) in the 1950s, arguing that psychological distress comes from irrational beliefs about events rather than the events themselves, and that disputing those beliefs directly changes how a person feels and acts. REBT is widely credited as a direct forerunner of cognitive behavioral therapy.
